The Old John Street Church and Museum's own biographical page for Philip Embury records that he emigrated from Ireland to New York City in 1760 with a group of fellow Methodists, stopped preaching after his arrival, and resumed at the urging of his cousin Barbara Heck, holding the first Methodist meeting in his own home in October 1766 with six people present, the founding act of the congregation that still occupies the John Street site today.
