Josephus, Antiquities of the Jews, Book XVIII

This is Book Eighteen of Flavius Josephus's Antiquities of the Jews, written around 93 to 94 CE, containing the Testimonium Flavianum, the passage referencing Jesus. As the primary ancient text it is the correct source for what Josephus actually wrote, so far as the manuscript tradition preserves it. Its limit is exactly the point most specialists hold about this passage: that a later Christian scribe expanded an original, shorter reference, so the passage as it survives is not read as pure first century testimony, even though most scholars regard its core claim, that Jesus was condemned under Pilate, as authentic to Josephus. A claim resting on the passage's fuller theological language should be read as the later expansion, not Josephus's own words.
