Juha Pentikainen's study works from documented folkloric and historical research into the oral material Elias Lonnrot actually compiled and edited into the printed Kalevala, tracing the mythology behind the compiled epic back toward its oral sources rather than treating the Kalevala as an unmediated ancient text. That source-critical distinction between the oral tradition and Lonnrot's own editorial compilation is the study's real evidentiary basis, and this is an expanded edition, incorporating analysis added since the original publication. This record has not independently traced further scholarly disagreement with Pentikainen's specific claims since this expanded edition. Use it for the documented mythological background and compilation history behind the Kalevala; a claim about the Kalevala's own printed text needs the epic itself addressed directly.
