Manasara on Architecture and Sculpture

Prasanna Kumar Acharya's translation of the Manasara, a classical Sanskrit treatise on architecture and sculpture, renders one of the foundational vastu-shastra texts governing Hindu temple design, iconometry and construction proportion. As a translated primary source, it carries the tradition's own prescriptive authority, valuable for the theological and geometric logic behind Hindu temple and image-making. Acharya's early twentieth century translation, while historically significant for introducing the text to English-language scholarship, has been refined by later Sanskritists on specific technical points, and like any prescriptive shastra text it describes an idealized standard rather than a uniform record of how temples were actually built across India's considerable regional variation, a distinction specialists in Indian architectural history treat as important.
