David Randall-MacIver's Mediaeval Rhodesia, published by Macmillan in 1906, is an early scholarly archaeological report. Its strength is that it is a primary excavation account, among the first professional archaeological studies of Great Zimbabwe and related sites, and it established on excavated evidence that the site was of African, not foreign, origin. Its limit is that as an early twentieth century excavation report it reflects the archaeological methods and dating tools of its own time, since refined by later work at the same sites.
