R. Makana Risser Chai's Na Mo'olelo Lomilomi: The Traditions of Hawaiian Massage and Healing, published by Bishop Museum Press in 2005, is the first dedicated scholarly study of lomilomi published by a major press, compiled from roughly two hundred published historical sources dating back to 1779 and oral histories gathered from more than sixty native healers between the 1830s and 2004. Its authority rests on publication by the Bishop Museum, Hawaii's state chartered natural and cultural history institution, and on the breadth of primary documentary and oral history material Chai brought together and contextualised. It is a compiled documentary history with the compiler's own connecting commentary rather than a single author ethnographic argument, which is itself the source of its strength as a reference work spanning the tradition's disruption and its Hawaiian Renaissance era revival.

Notes
The first dedicated lomilomi study published by a major publisher (the Bishop Museum, Hawaii's state-chartered natural and cultural history institution): a documentary history compiling published accounts since 1779 and oral histories from more than sixty native healers collected from the 1830s to 2004, spanning the technique and its mana/pule framing through the post-annexation disruption of Native Hawaiian healing practice and its Hawaiian Renaissance-era revival.
