Nazareth Inscription (Bibliotheque nationale de France, Cabinet des medailles)

The Nazareth Inscription, held in the Bibliotheque nationale de France's Froehner collection, is a Greek-inscribed marble slab recording an imperial edict against tomb disturbance, acquired in Paris in 1878 with a note that it came from Nazareth, though its actual find circumstances before that purchase were never documented and remain unknown. It has long been cited, cautiously, as possible indirect evidence connected to early reports of Jesus's empty tomb. That reading has grown considerably harder to sustain: recent stable-isotope analysis traced the marble itself to the Greek island of Kos rather than the Levant, and the inscription's undocumented path to a nineteenth century Paris dealer leaves genuine, unresolved doubt about whether it is even ancient rather than a well-informed period forgery. Cite it as a real, physically examined artifact whose connection to Nazareth and to any Christian event is unproven and increasingly doubted, not as corroborating evidence for the resurrection tradition.
