Patrick Vinton Kirch is an archaeologist specializing in the Pacific Islands, and this book, now in a second edition from University of California Press, is a synthesis of archaeological research on Pacific Island settlement, society and culture before European contact. Its strength is that Kirch is himself an active field archaeologist across many Pacific island groups, and the book draws directly on decades of excavation and dating evidence rather than secondhand summary, with the second edition incorporating research done since the first. Its limit is that, as with any broad regional synthesis, findings for individual islands or cultures are necessarily compressed, so questions about a specific island's religious or ritual practice are best supplemented with a source focused on that particular place.
