Alexander A. Parker's The Allegorical Drama of Calderon: An Introduction to the Autos Sacramentales, The Dolphin Book Co., London, 1943, reprinted 1961 and 1968, is the founding twentieth century academic study of Calderon de la Barca's autos sacramentales, examining works including El gran teatro del mundo and La vida es sueno as sustained theological allegory rather than as inferior drama. Its strength is that it remains the study later Hispanists still cite as having established the genre's serious critical treatment. Its limit is its age and its small specialist press: it predates the modern university press peer review process this atlas reserves for its top tier, and later scholarship has refined some of its readings.
