Margaret Smith's Rabia the Mystic and Her Fellow-Saints in Islam, Cambridge University Press, 1928, is a scholarly study. Its strength is that it was among the first serious academic treatments in English of Rabia al-Adawiyya and early women mystics in Islam, drawing on primary Arabic sources. Its limit is that it is nearly a century old, written before much of the later critical scholarship on early Sufism, so its specific claims are best checked against more recent academic work on the same figures.
