A peer-reviewed archaeological reassessment of Cassius Dio's claim that Roman forces killed 580,000 rebels and razed 985 villages and 50 fortresses during the Bar Kokhba War, drawing on settlement surveys and excavation evidence from Judaea, Transjordan and the Galilee, an ethno-archaeological comparison against Ottoman-period settlement patterns, and an evaluation of Middle Roman Period sites. The authors conclude the archaeological evidence corroborates a genuine, large-scale depopulation of central and southern Judaea consistent with the scale Dio describes, against a long scholarly tradition treating his figures as rhetorical exaggeration.

Reliability Tier1
Raviv (Bar-Ilan University) and Ben David (Kinneret Academic College) are field archaeologists of Roman-period Judaea, and this peer-reviewed Journal of Roman Archaeology article is a direct, methods-explicit reassessment of Dio's figures against physical settlement evidence rather than a restatement of the ancient text, the source this atlas draws its higher death-toll bound from.
