Religion of a Different Color: Race and the Mormon Struggle for Whiteness, W. Paul Reeve's 2015 study from Oxford University Press, is a peer-reviewed scholarly history of how Mormons were racialized and of how the church's own priesthood and temple restriction on people of Black African descent developed under Brigham Young in the 1850s and operated until its 1978 rescission. Its strength is that it is rigorous, award-winning academic history from a top university press. Its limit is that it examines the restriction's origins and historiography; the church's own Gospel Topics essay should be read alongside it for the institution's current account.

Reliability Tier1
Reliability tier 1: a peer reviewed, award winning scholarly history from Oxford University Press, written by a named academic historian, the standard peer reviewed academic form for this claim. NotesW. Paul Reeve's peer-reviewed scholarly history of how nineteenth and twentieth century Mormons were racialized as not fully white, and of how the church's own restriction barring men and women of Black African descent from priesthood ordination and temple ordinances developed under Brigham Young in the 1850s and operated until its 1978 rescission. Use for the restriction's origins and its treatment by professional historians of Mormonism and race, alongside the church's own Gospel Topics essay for the institutional account.
