Its strength is that it is a widely praised, deeply researched account of Salonica's Christian, Muslim and Jewish communities across five centuries, drawing on archival material in several languages. Its limit is the ordinary one for a single, wide ranging urban history: it necessarily compresses material that specialist studies of any one of the city's communities treat in finer detail.
