David B. Barrett was a missiologist and statistician of world religion, and this academic book, published by Oxford University Press's Nairobi office, is a large scale analytical survey of independent African Christian churches and prophetic movements, drawing on Barrett's own extensive continent wide data collection covering thousands of distinct movements. Its strength is genuinely comparative scope, Barrett gathered systematic data across a huge range of movements rather than presenting a small number of case studies, letting patterns across the whole phenomenon emerge.
