Andy Letcher's Shroom: A Cultural History of the Magic Mushroom, Faber and Faber, 2006, is a scholarly cultural history. Its strength is that it is the standard critical literature account of Allegro's reception and of the wider mushroom cult theory tradition, tracing how the claim spread and why scholars in the field rejected it. Its limit is the ordinary one for a single cultural history: it is Letcher's own synthesis of a body of claims and their reception, not a specialist mycological or biblical philology study in its own right.
