Socrates: Ironist and Moral Philosopher, Gregory Vlastos's 1991 academic monograph from Cambridge University Press, is the standard modern academic study of the historical Socrates, distinguishing him from Plato's later philosophical use of him, and includes chapters on Socratic irony, the elenchus, and the distinction between what Socrates the ironist may have believed and what ancient and modern readers disagree about attributing to him. Its strength is that it is the standard modern study of this distinction. Its limit is that the very distinction it draws, between the historical Socrates and Plato's Socrates, remains itself a live subject of scholarly disagreement about what can be safely attributed to the historical figure.
