Yehuda Liebes is a scholar of Kabbalah at Hebrew University, and this SUNY Press volume collects his scholarly studies on the Zohar, the foundational text of Kabbalistic mysticism, engaging with questions of its authorship, composition and mythic content. Its strength is that Liebes worked in the tradition established by Gershom Scholem while also revising some of Scholem's own conclusions, particularly on the Zohar's authorship, giving the book real standing within an active and rigorous field. Its limit is that it is a set of specialist studies aimed at scholars already familiar with Kabbalistic literature, so a reader wanting a general introduction to Kabbalah as a whole needs a broader source alongside it.
