The Sutta Nipata, part of the Pali canon's Khuddaka Nikaya, is among the oldest strata of Buddhist scripture on linguistic and stylistic grounds, containing the Metta Sutta on loving-kindness at 1.8 and the Mangala Sutta on blessings at 2.4, both widely chanted texts in Theravada practice today. Its strength is that its early linguistic layer gives scholars real grounds, archaic vocabulary and verse forms, for dating it closer to the earliest transmitted Buddhist teaching than most of the canon, rather than relying only on traditional claim. Its limit is that even the earliest textual layer was still transmitted orally for generations before being committed to writing, so precise dating of any individual sutta within the collection remains an argument from internal linguistic evidence rather than an externally fixed date, and a claim asserting an exact date of composition for a specific sutta overstates what the textual evidence itself can establish.
