The Balts, Marija Gimbutas' 1963 study from Thames and Hudson, is an early scholarly account of the ancient Baltic peoples and their culture. Its strength is that Gimbutas was a leading archaeologist of the ancient Baltic and Slavic world writing from direct archaeological expertise. Its limit is that it is now over sixty years old, and Gimbutas' broader interpretive framework, especially around goddess-centered religion, has been substantially revised by later archaeologists.
