This is R. H. Charles's English translation of 1 Enoch, an ancient Jewish apocalyptic text not included in the Hebrew Bible but preserved in full only in Ethiopic and influential on early Jewish and Christian apocalyptic thought, published through the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge. Charles was a serious scholar of Jewish apocalyptic and pseudepigraphal literature, and this translation was, for decades, the standard English access point to the text for scholars and general readers alike. Its limit is its age, dating from 1917, and later discoveries, including Aramaic fragments of Enoch found among the Dead Sea Scrolls, have refined understanding of the text's transmission since, so a technically precise point is best checked against more recent scholarly translations informed by that later evidence.
