Franklin Knight's The Caribbean: The Genesis of a Fragmented Nationalism, Oxford University Press, 1990, is a scholarly history. Its strength is that it is a widely used academic survey tracing how the Caribbean's colonial fragmentation shaped the region's distinct national identities. Its limit is the ordinary one for a broad regional survey: covering many islands and colonial powers at once means individual national histories receive less depth than a country specific study would give them.
