Pekka Hamalainen's The Comanche Empire, Yale University Press, 2008, is a scholarly history. Its strength is that it argues, from a wide base of archival and Indigenous sources, that the Comanche built a genuine imperial power in the American Southwest that rivalled and at times outmatched Spanish, Mexican and early American power in the region. Its limit is the ordinary one for a bold revisionist thesis: the empire framing itself remains debated among historians even as the book's underlying research is widely respected.
