The Destruction of the European Jews

Raul Hilberg's The Destruction of the European Jews, published by Quadrangle Books in 1961, is the foundational scholarly study of the Holocaust's bureaucratic machinery, built on Hilberg's own exhaustive research into German administrative and railway records to trace how the genocide was organized and executed as a process across the Nazi state apparatus. Hilberg was a pioneering Holocaust historian whose method, following the paper trail of orders, transports and administrative decisions, established the documentary basis much later Holocaust scholarship still builds on. Its strength is precisely that documentary grounding, treating the genocide as a traceable bureaucratic and logistical process rather than only a moral or narrative event. Its limit is that Hilberg's early focus on perpetrator records and administrative process gave comparatively less attention to victim testimony and Jewish resistance than later scholarship has since restored, so a claim about victims' own experience needs sources centering that testimony alongside Hilberg's institutional account.
