Muller was a serious Sanskritist of the era, and the translation opened this text to English readers at real scale for the first time. Its limit is its age, dating from 1881, so later translators working with more developed Pali scholarship have refined some of Muller's readings, and specific difficult verses are best cross checked against a modern translation where precision on wording matters, even though the underlying text remains the same.FactsClaims Backed By This Source (95 claims)Comments (0)Reader Challenges (0 open reader challenges)FactsAssessmentReliability TierWell-attested2F. Max Muller's 1881 translation of the Dhammapada for the Sacred Books of the East series, among the first to bring the text to Western scholarly readers; held at the tier for an early landmark translation since it has since been superseded in places by renderings closer to current Pali scholarship.NotesWell-attestedF. Max Muller's classic 1881 English translation of the Dhammapada, part of the historic Sacred Books of the East series that first brought Asian scriptures to Western scholarly readers. Use for the content of the Dhammapada as this translation renders it; a very early scholarly translation, superseded in places by modern renderings closer to current Pali scholarship, so a fine point of wording may need a more recent translation alongside it.CitationAuthorWell-attestedF.
