The Doctrine and Covenants is a primary scripture of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a compiled collection of revelations attributed to Joseph Smith and, after his death, to his successors as church presidents, so it is a living, growing document rather than a fixed historical text. It is strongest as a record of what the church itself teaches and has taught at different points, since it is the church's own canon, published and maintained by the church. It is not an independent historical or textual analysis, and sections have been added, removed or renumbered over the church's history, so an undated general citation to it should be treated as reporting current church doctrine rather than a single fixed original text.
