Bertram Forer's The Fallacy of Personal Validation is the original 1949 paper reporting the classroom demonstration now called the Forer effect, in which Forer gave students an identical, deliberately vague personality sketch assembled from newspaper astrology columns and most rated it as a highly accurate personal description. As a primary psychological study it is methodologically simple but has proven remarkably durable, replicated many times since under the related name the Barnum effect, and it stands as well-established, uncontested experimental psychology rather than a disputed finding. Its scope is specifically about the psychology of accepting vague self-description as accurate; it is evidence about human cognitive bias in receiving personality feedback, not a direct claim about the validity or invalidity of astrology, tarot or any particular divinatory system as a whole.
