The Joseph Smith Papers, Revelations and Translations, Volume 3: Printer's Manuscript of the Book of Mormon

The Joseph Smith Papers, Revelations and Translations, Volume 3, edited by Royal Skousen and Robin Scott Jensen, is a scholarly documentary edition of the printer's manuscript of the Book of Mormon, published by the Church Historian's Press as part of the wider Joseph Smith Papers Project. Skousen in particular is a recognized textual scholar who has spent decades on the Book of Mormon's manuscript history specifically, and the edition's authority rests on rigorous documentary and textual editing methods applied to the actual manuscript. Its institutional sponsorship by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints's own historian's press is also transparent rather than hidden, and the volume's scholarly editorial standards are recognized outside the Church as well. Its limit is that it documents the manuscript's textual history rather than adjudicating the Book of Mormon's claimed origin, a separate historical and theological question.
