Nahum M. Sarna was a biblical scholar, and this Jewish Publication Society volume is his standard commentary on the Book of Genesis, part of the JPS Torah Commentary series, integrating classical rabbinic interpretation with modern historical critical biblical scholarship rather than treating the two as separate tracks. Its strength is exactly that integration, Sarna reads Genesis both as sacred text within the Jewish interpretive tradition and as an ancient Near Eastern document open to comparative and philological analysis, a combination that gives the commentary standing with both traditional and academic readers. Its limit is that as a commentary organized verse by verse around the biblical text itself, it is the place to check what Genesis says, not a source for material outside Genesis, such as the Talmud's own later legal elaboration, which needs its own separate sources.
