Ruth Alden Doan's study places the Millerite movement inside the wider currents of antebellum American reform and popular religion, rather than treating it as an isolated curiosity, and was published by an independent university press with no denominational tie to any of the movements that grew from Millerism's aftermath. That institutional independence from every successor body is a real, checkable fact about who published it, distinct from a claim about prestige. This record has not independently traced a documented history of scholarly disagreement with Doan's specific readings. Use it alongside George R. Knight's denominationally published history for an account of the Great Disappointment written from outside every tradition it gave rise to.
