Marguerite Porete's The Mirror of Simple Souls, in Ellen L. Babinsky's translation for Paulist Press's Classics of Western Spirituality series, 1993, is a primary text in scholarly translation. Its strength is that it is the beguine mystic's own work, condemned by the Church, whose 1310 execution for continuing to circulate it is documented history rather than legend. Its limit is the ordinary one for any translated medieval mystical text: Babinsky's own translation choices shape how a modern reader encounters ideas that were controversial even in Porete's own language.
