Harry S. Stout's The New England Soul: Preaching and Religious Culture in Colonial New England, Oxford University Press, 1986, is the standard academic study of Puritan religious culture in early New England. It covers the Pilgrims' 1620 landing and the founding of Plymouth Colony, and the much larger Massachusetts Bay Colony, chartered in 1629 and established from 1630 under Governor John Winthrop, both settled by English Protestants seeking freedom from the practices of the Church of England.
