Yaska was an ancient Sanskrit grammarian, and this is Lakshman Sarup's critical edition and English translation of Yaska's Nirukta together with the older glossary it comments on, the Nighantu, originally published by Oxford University Press in parts between 1920 and 1929 and reprinted by Motilal Banarsidass. As a scholarly critical edition of these primary Sanskrit etymological texts it is the correct source for their content in careful translation, with Sarup's own critical apparatus addressing textual variants. Its limit is that it is a technical philological edition aimed at Sanskrit scholars, so a reader wanting a general account of Vedic interpretation and etymological method for a non-specialist audience needs a more accessible secondary source alongside this critical edition.
