Alfred Watkins's The Old Straight Track, Methuen, 1925, is a primary text, the actual origin of the ley line idea. Its strength is that Watkins himself proposed leys strictly as archaeological alignments of ancient sites, tracks and landmarks, with no claim about any kind of energy running through them. Its limit is that the book is an amateur antiquarian's own hypothesis, never accepted by professional archaeology, and its later reinterpretation as an energy phenomenon by other writers is not something Watkins himself argued.
