Frances A. Yates was a historian of Renaissance esotericism, and this Routledge and Kegan Paul book is her classic academic study of the seventeenth century Rosicrucian manifestos and the intellectual and political climate in central Europe that produced them. Its strength, and the reason it remains a standard reference decades after publication, is Yates's deep grounding in the Renaissance hermetic and Paracelsian sources that fed into the manifestos, read against the specific political crisis of the Bohemian Palatinate. Its limit, and this is openly noted on the source record itself, is that Yates's wider thesis, connecting Rosicrucianism to a broad continental intellectual movement, has since been disputed by later scholars who read the evidence for that wider connection as thinner than she argued, so her larger claims should be weighed against that later critical literature.
