Dimitry Pospielovsky's The Russian Church under the Soviet Regime is a major scholarly history of Orthodox Christianity's persecution, survival and periodic accommodation under Soviet rule from the revolution through the early 1980s, written by a historian with direct access to emigre archives and testimony as well as published Soviet sources. Its authority is substantial and it remains a standard reference for the period. Because it was researched and published before the Soviet Union's own archives opened after 1991, later historians working with declassified state and church archives have refined, and in some specific cases corrected, details of Pospielovsky's account, so its broad narrative remains trusted while any single precise figure or episode is worth checking against the post-Soviet archival scholarship that followed it.
