Guido von List's The Secret of the Runes, in Stephen Flowers's critical English translation, Destiny Books, 1988, is von List's own foundational Armanist runic text, presented here in scholarly annotated translation. Its strength is that Flowers's translation carries a real critical apparatus placing the runic system in its own early twentieth century Austrian occult context. Its limit is that the underlying work is a single practitioner's own invented esoteric system, entangled with the volkisch nationalism of its period, not a reconstruction of any attested ancient runic tradition, and Flowers's introduction names that context directly.
