Elisabeth Sifton's The Serenity Prayer: Faith and Politics in Times of Peace and War, W. W. Norton, 2003, is a scholarly history, written by the daughter of the prayer's author, theologian Reinhold Niebuhr. Its strength is that Sifton had direct family access to the prayer's own composition history alongside a historian's method, tracing its actual origin against competing popular legends. Its limit is the ordinary one for a history written by a close family member: her own closeness to the subject is also a possible source of bias, though her account is the best documented one available.
