The Tswana, Isaac Schapera's ethnographic survey with Part Two, covering 1953 to 1985, added by John L. Comaroff, International African Institute, Ethnographic Survey of Africa, 1953, is the standard ethnographic survey of Tswana society and religion, covering Modimo, badimo ancestor veneration, rainmaking, initiation and divination, and, in Comaroff's addition, the transformation of Tswana religious life through 1985 including Christian mission churches and independent Zionist and Apostolic movements. Its strength is that it is a respected series entry spanning two authors' direct fieldwork across more than three decades. Its limit is that a work with two authors writing thirty years apart requires attributing any specific claim to the correct half's author and period.
