The Veddas, C. G. Seligmann and Brenda Z. Seligmann's 1911 ethnography from Cambridge University Press, is the earliest systematic survey of Vedda communities in Sri Lanka, drawn from fieldwork in 1907 and 1908, describing Ne Yaku, named ancestral spirits, and Kande Yaka, a mountain deity. Its strength is that it is the foundational survey of the subject, and the Seligmanns themselves already treated Vedda tradition as varied and in contact with Sinhalese Buddhist practice at the time of their fieldwork. Its limit is that later scholarship has revised the survey's assumptions about which communities it selected as most representative, and it is not a source for any stated cosmogony or creator figure, which the survey does not describe.
