Arthur Hertzberg's The Zionist Idea: A Historical Analysis and Reader, Doubleday and Herzl Press, 1959, is a scholarly historical analysis and documentary reader. Its strength is that it combines Hertzberg's own historical framing with primary Zionist texts collected in one volume, letting a reader check his analysis against the movement's own words. Its limit is the ordinary one for a work now over sixty years old: later Zionist historiography has continued past 1959, so it is a foundational account of the movement's early history rather than a current one.
