The Zohar: Pritzker Edition

The Zohar, Pritzker Edition, translated by Daniel C. Matt and others for Stanford University Press, published across twelve volumes from 2004 to 2017 with scholarly commentary, is a primary text in critical translation. Its strength is that it is a rigorously annotated modern translation of the foundational text of Kabbalah, produced by leading scholars in the field rather than a devotional paraphrase. Its limit is the ordinary one for any translation of medieval mystical Aramaic and Hebrew: word choice and the accompanying commentary reflect the translators' own scholarly judgment, and a reader working on a fine point of meaning should consult the notes alongside the text.
