The Tribune's report on the Additional Sessions Court, Gandhinagar, convicting Asaram Bapu on 30 January 2023 and sentencing him on 31 January 2023, Additional Sessions Judge D.K. Soni presiding, to a second life term plus a fine of 50,000 rupees paid as victim compensation. The case, registered in 2013, concerned the repeated rape of a woman disciple from Surat at Asaram's ashram in Motera, near Ahmedabad, between 2001 and 2006. Six co-accused, including Asaram's wife Laxmiben, their daughter, and four disciples, were acquitted of aiding and abetting for want of evidence. Asaram was already serving a separate life sentence from a 2018 Jodhpur conviction; his defence announced it would challenge this second conviction before the Gujarat High Court.
