Walden; or, Life in the Woods

Henry David Thoreau's Walden, Or, Life in the Woods, published by Ticknor and Fields in 1854, is Thoreau's own primary account of his two years living beside Walden Pond, presenting a Transcendentalist argument for simplified living and direct engagement with nature as a spiritual practice. Its strength is that it is the primary text itself, the correct source for what Thoreau actually wrote and argued rather than a paraphrase. Its limit is that Walden is a literary and philosophical composition, shaped and revised over years for rhetorical effect, rather than a strict journal of Thoreau's daily experience, a distinction Thoreau scholarship has documented by comparing the published text against his actual field journals, so a claim treating a specific episode in Walden as an unembellished record of fact should be checked against that separate journal evidence.
