Origin from 1867
In 1865 the synod of the Canadian church wrote to Charles Thomas Longley, Archbishop of Canterbury, unsettled by a recent Privy Council ruling in the heresy case of Bishop John Colenso of Natal, and asked him to convene a national synod of the bishops of the Anglican Church at home and abroad to hold the scattered Communion together. Longley agreed, and seventy six bishops from across the world accepted his invitation to meet at Lambeth Palace, where the conference opened on 24 September 1867 and sat for four days of private sessions. In a letter issued the same day, Longley made clear the gathering was consultative rather than legislative, that it would not act as a general synod empowered to bind the churches represented. The meeting was the first time bishops of the young Anglican Communion had gathered as a single family for mutual counsel, and it began the pattern of roughly decennial Lambeth Conferences that has continued since, including the 1888 meeting that adopted the Chicago Lambeth Quadrilateral.
