From 14 to 18 August 2023, the Parliament of the World's Religions convened in Chicago, one hundred and thirty years after its first gathering there in 1893, drawing more than seven thousand attendees from over ninety five countries and more than two hundred traditions under the theme A Call to Conscience, Defending Freedom and Human Rights.
A delegation of five Cao Dai practitioners, Hong Dang Bui, Dieu Duc Anh Tuyet, Tham Le, Hoang Le and Vinh Q. Vinh, traveled from California, Oregon, Washington, Massachusetts, Virginia and Texas to take part, organizing several sessions of their own within the gathering.
Among them was a multi faith panel on Cao Dai's practices of self realization, held together with Jewish, Unity Church and Sufi participants, placing Cao Dai's own account of the practice alongside three other traditions' accounts of comparable disciplines.
The delegation also led a session, listed in the Parliament's own program, on engaging young members in the tradition's spiritual and service life, addressing a question every tradition represented at the gathering shares, how to carry practice forward to a next generation.
What the 2023 Chicago gathering changed for Cao Dai's spread was placing five practitioners from six different American states on programmed sessions of the world's oldest interfaith gathering, returning to the same city where the Parliament itself began one hundred and thirty years earlier.
