Origin from 1749
In the 1740s the Moravian Church faced mounting suspicion in Britain and its American colonies, accused of secretive practices and uncertain loyalty as a foreign sect. Count Nikolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf travelled to London in 1747 and again in January 1749, working with allies including General James Oglethorpe and Thomas Penn to secure a formal hearing. Oglethorpe presented a petition to the House of Commons on 20 February 1749, and Parliament passed An Act for Encouraging the People known by the Name of Unitas Fratrum, or United Brethren, receiving royal assent on 6 June and taking effect on 24 June. The Act declared the United Brethren an ancient Protestant Episcopal Church descended from the fifteenth century Bohemian Brethren, granted members the right to affirm rather than swear oaths, and allowed colonists to be excused from personal military service upon payment. The recognition ended years of legal uncertainty and let Moravian congregations organize openly across Britain and its American colonies.
