On 8 July 2008, meeting in Quebec City, Canada, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee inscribed the Baha'i Holy Places in Haifa and the Western Galilee on the World Heritage List, twenty nine years after the Iranian Revolution triggered systematic persecution of Baha'is in 1979, already recorded here. The listing covers the Shrine of the Bab on Mount Carmel in Haifa and the Shrine of Baha'u'llah near Acre, together with their surrounding terraced gardens and associated buildings across eleven locations, the resting places of the Baha'i Faith's two central figures and the destination of Baha'i pilgrimage. The committee cited the sites' outstanding universal value and their testimony to a living tradition of pilgrimage, and the designation made the Baha'i shrines the first sites connected with a religion born in the modern era to enter the World Heritage List, joining the Great Wall of China and the Pyramids of Giza among humanity's recognized cultural heritage, years before the Baha'i House of Worship opened in Santiago in 2016, already recorded here.
