Christian Liturgical and Mystery Drama

The medieval European tradition of dramatizing biblical history for civic and liturgical occasions, most often Corpus Christi or a related feast, growing out of the church's own liturgy: Quem Quaeritis (the sung Easter trope credited as its origin), Oberufer Christmas Plays (a German folk nativity cycle), the York, Wakefield, N-Town and Chester Mystery Plays (English biblical cycles staged by trade guilds), the Mystery Play of Elche and Auto Sacramental (Spanish liturgical and Eucharistic drama), Everyman (an English morality play descended from the same stage), and Sacre Rappresentazioni (Florentine vernacular religious plays). Belongs here: a European Christian dramatic form staging biblical history, a saint, a virtue allegory or a Eucharistic mystery for a liturgical or civic feast, distinct from a Passion specifically. Does not belong here: a work whose entire subject is Christ's own passion and death, held under Christian Passion and Easter Drama instead, even though the two traditions share medieval European roots.
