Precolonial and colonial-era indigenous dramatic tradition of Mesoamerica: Rabinal Achi, a Maya dynastic drama performed each January in Rabinal, Guatemala, in the Kiche language under the direction of local lay religious brotherhoods. Belongs here: an indigenous American ritual drama tradition predating or standing apart from the European mission traditions. Does not belong here: a Christian devotional drama performed in the Americas, such as the Alexandria Messiah pageant, held under Christian Passion and Easter Drama instead.
