Tongs are a hinged, scissor-like gripping tool used to hold, lift, and move a crucible or other vessel while it is still hot from the fire, letting an operator handle it without direct contact. The tool is ancient and universal, depicted constantly in metallurgical and alchemical illustration wherever a scene shows a crucible being taken from or set into a furnace, with no single inventor or first description to point to any more than the mortar and pestle has. Vannoccio Biringuccio's and Georgius Agricola's sixteenth-century metallurgical treatises, which document the reverberatory furnace and cupellation in such careful detail, take tongs entirely for granted as ordinary workshop equipment rather than describing them as anything noteworthy in themselves. That taken-for-granted status has not changed: crucible tongs remain standard equipment today in exactly the form and the exact job they always had, wherever a laboratory, foundry, or jewelry workshop needs to move something too hot to touch.

How Tongs Work

Tongs are built from two long arms joined by a pivot or hinge near one end, with the arms crossing so that squeezing the handles together at one end closes the gripping jaws at the other, the same basic mechanism as a pair of scissors or pliers. The jaws themselves are shaped to match whatever they are meant to grip, often curved or notched to cradle the rounded body of a crucible securely from the outside without needing to touch its rim or its contents, and the long arms keep the operator's hands well clear of the heat radiating from a vessel just pulled from a furnace.

Squeezing the handles closes the jaws firmly enough to lift and carry the vessel's full weight, and the leverage built into the long arms means that grip can be maintained with far less hand strength than trying to hold a hot vessel directly would require, even as the vessel and its contents may weigh a considerable amount. Because the jaws contact only the vessel's outer surface, tongs let an operator tilt and pour from a crucible, moving molten metal or a heated substance exactly where it needed to go, entirely without exposing skin to either the vessel or whatever superheated material was inside it. Different jaw shapes suited different jobs, a wide flat pair for gripping a broad crucible and a narrower, deeper pair for reaching into a furnace to lift a smaller vessel out from among hot coals.

Tongs are among the oldest metalworking tools in existence, necessary from the moment humans began working with fire hot enough to be dangerous to bare hands, and they appear constantly in ancient, medieval, and early modern illustrations of forges, furnaces, and alchemical workshops without any single inventor or documented point of origin, much like the mortar and pestle and the sieve. The major sixteenth-century metallurgical treatises take tongs entirely for granted: Vannoccio Biringuccio's De la Pirotechnia of 1540 and Georgius Agricola's De Re Metallica of 1556, both painstaking in documenting furnaces, cupellation, and assaying procedure in careful technical detail, mention and illustrate tongs as ordinary workshop equipment rather than as anything requiring explanation, the clearest sign of just how basic and long-established the tool already was by then. That unremarkable, essential status has never changed.
